Why Three Is a Magic Number | Barnaby Lashbrooke

I’ve found the number three is the answer to a lot of frustrations. Not only is it the amount of steps needed to break through The Wall, but it’s also how long we should all be working.

For years, I set myself goals and then just worked and worked and worked. I’d go through bursts of energy, followed by long periods of tiredness that left me feeling completely unmotivated. Then, three years ago I discovered a technique that quickly revolutionised my approach to work – working in three-month blocks.

It’s a strategy used by companies like Google, and since I’ve started using it my motivation, energy, and focus has increased massively. Working in this way has made me feel so much happier, plus it’s had an incredible impact on the business – since I started using it, our performance has improved dramatically.

By setting specific goals for just three months ahead, I’m in a much better rhythm. Research has shown that setting challenging and specific goals enhances engagement in attaining those goals. I can stay focused for so much longer and can deal with challenges much more effectively. At the end of each three-month cycle, I take a couple of days off to reflect. I take a closer look at what is and isn’t working in the business and have a brainstorming session about what I want to achieve in the next three months. It helps me make smarter decisions and means I can go into the next three months with renewed energy.

Working in three-month blocks has completely transformed my life and it’s a strategy I’m keen to share with other entrepreneurs. So, if you’re in a slump and finding yourself procrastinating, try out the three-month block and let me know if it works for you!
